With the command to mothball the shipyards on Phobos & Deimos above Mars while the Boadicea Merchant Company relocates assets to the Spinward Marches, came the proposal of marriage from Baroness Farin Julia Saxon-Tesla. Baron Jetson immediately accepts and outfits the Baroness with another Courier/Escort, the HMS Eightfold Way.

Only enough crewmen are hired to operate the vessel at a basic level since the vessel will synchronize Jump Drives and computers with the MS Ataraxis II.
Extensive use of droids will be pioneered with this mission.
A recruitment incentive is offered (unofficially) of chip implants for the human component of the crew to allow for greater control of automated equipment.

Queequeg grew up around the Pacific Rim of Earth (Terra/Sol) and eventually signed up as a harpooner on an American whaling vessel in the 19th century (AD)[c.-2670 Third Imperial Reckoning]. After being washed overboard from the Pequod, he was "time-transported" into the 22nd century on Earth. During this chaotic period of Earth's history, he is rescued by the "Raft" where he encounters Raven of Amchitka and learns even more deadly skill with the harpoon. When the "Raft" breaks up, he flees in a catamaran and sails around the world subsisting on sea life and trading skins on the black market. When he reaches the Atlantic ocean, he is lost in the Bermuda Triangle and reappears on Imperial Earth in the 57th century.

Taken as just another primitive war-refugee survivor of the conquering of Earth, he is granted alien work status and he immediately signs on with free traders heading away from Earth. He is seeking enlightenment through his religion and is very open minded about high technology (viewing it as magic). He will be interested in any leads about time-travel research; he has a vague idea about returning to his time on Earth. If he finds as beautiful planet as Earth, he may settle down, especially if the planet in question is not overly settled and has edible sea-life.

Queequeg is reasonably intelligent and has had no problem learning how to be an excellent starship gunner. Infiltration is his specialty.

Hans is from a Water world and spent his formative years entirely indoors in a seabed colony. When he enlisted in the Imperial Navy, he found that life aboard ship is not much different than life in a submarine or undersea colony. He is mildly agoraphobic and while capable of EVA, would prefer not to leave the ship. Even when the ship is in port or landed on a habitable planet, he prefers to stay aboard the ship and work on the engines or tinker with his own gravity car that Captain North has graciously (with Lady Farin's permission of course) allowed to berth in the cargo hold. I just had to post this passage from CS Lewis' "Till We Have Faces":

The Fox was standing with his face set like iron; he would have wept if he had tried to speak. I saw a great shock of surprise come over Trunia (and I never blamed him for turning pale) when I flung off my cloak, drew my sword, and stepped out onto the grass.

The men from Phars roared with laughter. Our mob cheered. Argan was within ten paces of me, then five; then we were at it.

I know he began despising me; there was a lazy insolence in his first passes. But I took the skin off his knuckles with one lucky stroke (and maybe numbed his hand a little) and that brought him to his senses. Though my eye never left his sword, yet I somehow saw his face as well. "Cross-patch," thought I. He had a puckered brow and a sort of blackguardly fretfulness about his lip, which perhaps already masked some fear. For my part, I felt no fear because, now that we were really at it, I did not believe in the combat at all. It was so like all my sham fights with Bardia: the same strokes, feints, deadlocks. You, the Greek for whom I write, may never have fought; or if you did, you fought, most likely, as a hoplite. Unless I were with you and had a sword, or at least a stick, in my hand I could not make you understand the course of it. I soon felt sure he could not kill me. But I was less sure I could kill him. I was very afraid lest the thing should last too long and his greater strength would grind me down. What I shall remember forever is the change that presently came over his face. After recovering the alien spacecraft on behalf of Professor MacDougal and the Astronomic Temple, the Ataraxis and other equipment are sold to the Astronomic Temple and the Ataraxis II is laid down at the civilian yards on Demos at Mars/Sol/Solomani Rim. The crew make investments, tidy-up personal affairs, and travel forward in time to commission the Ataraxis II and take it out for a shake-down cruise. Baron George and Prof. MacDougal decide to go ahead with a secret plan to transport the alien spacecraft to Darrian space for a high-level strategic technology transfer between the Third Imperium and the Darrian Confederation.
They must take a more direct route to the Spinward Marches to stay ahead of any possible reports from spies, etc. After much conferring, the senior staff of Boadicea Merchant Company decide to take a route through the edge of Aslani space and cross the Great Rift at the J-5 route. At the beginning of Year 1104, the Ataraxis II has reached Iddamakur [0110, Solomani Rim].

Act One

Baron Jetson commissions the M.S. Ataraxis, ties up business connections, sails for the black to seek his fortune. His ship misjumps into the Sargasso of Space but is rescued when his crew combines efforts with the crew of the M.S. Boadicea and HMS Bayern to escape. The survivors precipitate into normal space in the Traveller universe near Prometheus and are then escorted by Imperial Warships to the Naval base. The survivors are cared for and educated on the basics of Imperial society and then given Imperial identification cards. [Some Imperial laws prohibit identification data to be in any way implanted in a human body, so the Naval Attache allows data devices to be utilized in a standard credit monetary-like card.]

Aboard the M.S. Boadicea, several weeks later, Egron G'Vargh, captain of the Boadicea, is killed in a liquid hydrogen rupture. Anya Jetson helps to set up a memorial trust to shield Egron's estate from probate and to promote causes that Captain Egron cared about. Anya Jetson had sailed with Egron while her brother George had dealt with the Imperial Government on behalf of his ship and business. When the Boadicea Merchant Company was formed and the Baron began hiring, many of the Boadicea's crew hired onto the M.S. Attaraxis since their former ship was being sold to liquidate Egron's estate.

Boadicea Merchant Company, Ltd. (BMC) is incorporated under that name. BMC purchases Firefly-class freighter, the MS Ataraxis. The Baron scores a mail route to Cymbeline endearing his company to the Bank of Earth, Lloyds of London subsidiary commercial bank that he is starting to channel his revenues through. Steady income always puts bankers at ease.

With a market for passengers expanding, Baron George hires a chef/steward, Haku, to increase the quality of the journey for new passengers and make living aboard a little more posh and comfortable. {Haku is on the run from a Yakuza organization.} The Baron also hires StuWiFoo for support in passenger services and to keep the ships' and business' computer systems secure.

At Cymbeline, several employees' contracts expire.

The Captain must hire new crew members. Dr. de Haviland is hired as ship's doctor.

Major de Haviland is hired as ship's security when the ship returns to Terra.

Due to acquiring another short charter to Cymbeline, George & Anya decide to take a non-standard route to Cymbeline to save time (and get a bonus). While in port at the mainworld of the system, Loki, they decide to hire a relief pilot so that they might have more time for market analysis. Liz DeWitte is hired and immediately fits in with the rest of the crew.

Sharon is hired when the Ataraxis arrives on Cymbeline. When the ship returns to earth a contact of the Baron sells him some Military-grade hardware to make the Ataraxis a bit more secure. While at Earth (Terra), the Baron hires two gunners, Houston Giles & Joan Eschanuk, and promotes Cassandra to gunnery officer.

BMC purchases land for facilities on Mars in the Sol system. The crew are excited about the possibility of future business expansion in other markets and types of business. The latest annual meeting of the company brought about discussion concerning possible salvage lines of business.

Sir Dr. James Ya-rasta Makeha-meha MacDougal and Lady Karen Chang with bodyguard & mentat, charter the Ataraxis to Banasdan subsector. The Baron leases his mail route to a relative of Lady Chang's.

Name: George Mingdoa Jetson III, majority shareholder & Captain of M.S. Ataraxis.

Notes: Baron Jetson grew up in a wealthy merchant family in the Core and was originally an Alliance supporter in the Unification War. Several of his friends from school and merchant academy died at the hands of Alliance gunboats while trying to conduct legitimate business with Independent worlds. Soured on the heavy-handedness of the all-pervasive Alliance Fascist Oligarchy, George vowed he would get out into the black to find business opportunity among the settlers, and live where he could keep as far from the Government as was humanly possible.

After the secret of Miranda was broadcast by Malcolm Reynolds, there began a short period of blood in the courts as the power structures of the Alliance shifted. George's father was one of those purged by agents of the Blue Sun Corporation. So, when the Baron inherited his father's estate, he liquidated the family's holdings, sold his condominium on Sihnon, and formed a corporation with his sister and an engineer friend-of-the-family (with another handful of select investors) for the purpose of seeking his fortune sailing the black. The funds raised for this business venture were used to commission a new Serenity-class freighter, hire crew & supplies, and a cargo load of valuables, and head for the rim to purchase commodities and get a feel for the markets and other opportunities.

On her maiden voyage, the M.S. Ataraxis precipitated through a wormhole opened in the Oort cloud by a galactic gravity quake. The Baron, first time captain of his own ship found himself in the Sargasso of Space and was in turn rescued by the valiant actions of the M.S. Boadicea and HMS Bayern.

After the M.S. Ataraxis precipitated back into normal space with the other survivors near Prometheus, the Baron was required to register his ship with the Imperial Naval Attache and have a compliant transponder connected. The jump drives, gravity/HePlaR maneuver drive system, and fusion power plant, as well as the other systems of the ship appeared to be unaffected by the transfer into the otu Universe, and with the hard work of Chief MacKinstry, the ship was released from impound and eligible to fly in Imperium Space.

While this year-long process wound it's way through it's bureaucratic path, George's sister Anya signed on to sail on the M.S. Boadicea, and became good friends with Egron G'vargh.

The Baron was required to re-register his corporation and give the Emperor a 1% Stake. George despised himself for going along with the Imperial system. but he could see that in the polities of humanity, with the communications lag, business friendly tax systems, and vast distances that many loopholes would exist which would allow many great business opportunities not available in the 'Verse with the Alliance still breathing down his neck. And the only way to get doors opened in Imperial space was to be part of the peerage, so... he had to go along with the social structure of the Imperium to do business until he could find a way back to the 'Verse. He may yet not even care to leave, since he has managed to amass huge capital reserves in a short time.

The Baron is a great schmoozer and is a very aggressive businessman. He has, however stepped on a few toes by making deals in Yakuza and Tong territories without making any cut to the bosses. The Baron is used to watching his back and has a great crew to help him out, and he has learned to be a bit more circumspect in his future dealings. But George Jetson is always on the lookout for a way to make serious coin; the crew is extremely loyal to the Baron since he has brought the company stock up to almost three times the IPO value.

Name: Elizabeth Marie DeWitt, Expert Pilot (M.S. Ataraxis II)

Elizabeth was originally from Earth from one of the richer nations (N. America). She took top honors at the Terran Confederation Aerospace Academy in San Francisco where she majored in Aeronautical Engineering. Rather than submit to the draft and because of an interest in flying, she volunteered for service in Earth's (Terra's) Close Orbit and Aerospace Command and Control as an interceptor pilot. After a ten year marriage to Major Dmitre Blavatsky who died in one of the Interstellar wars, she grew sour on warfare and felt that a cultural and economic victory is a better way to conquer another civilization. After retiring from COACC, she shipped out on various merchant/explorer missions and made friends and contacts with the Vilani and Terrans alike.

On a return trip to Earth, her ship was caught in a temporal warp connected with space-time fluctuations resulting from the Galactic gravitational quake which created the Sargasso of Space.
She and her fellow crew members were rescued when the crew of the M.S. Boadicea and the Space Zeppelin HMS Bayern found a way to jump out of the Sargasso back into real-space near Prometheus. All the survivors were escorted by Imperial Warships to the local base and processed and released; Liz and the other survivors began to accept that their lives must include this strange future. They all began to be assimilated into Imperial culture.

After adjusting to the shock of finding one's self 3500 years in the future, she traveled a little finally settling on Cymbeline where she went back to flight school to learn the new technology and to take her mind off of the loss of everyone she had ever known. After graduating at the top of her class at the Merchant's Pilot School of Cymbeline, she took employment on various small merchant ships and exploration missions.

During one mission to the unexplored garden world, Janus, to survey an archaeological site where Artifacts of the Ancients (or Forerunners) were being discovered, a nano-virus plague was triggered. Fortunately for the sponsoring company, this was the last working security defense in a cave containing a major trove of Ancient's artifacts. Unfortunately for Elizabeth and her party, they became infected with the virus. The nine other persons in her party died painfully from the virus, she survived in mutated state. She had become stronger and smarter from the experience, but her condition could not be reversed by current technology. Her employer fired her and the Merchant Guild disowned her since the nano-virus had subtlety altered her dna to make her into a Green Person (social stigma).

The experience of becoming a Green Person brought her into contact with a large underclass of other humans who were the rare survivors of encounter with this nano-virus. Because of the general social stigma associated with the green colored people in known space, many with this condition are usually illegally traded as slaves at the fringes of the Imperium. (Rumors abound that this nano-virus is not Ancient's technology, but is rather an experiment by unknown agencies within the Imperial Government. Some believe that it is a discovery by a rogue scientist that was in turn given to the Ine Givar.)

Unemployed, living in a cheap apartment in Startown on Loki, she felt as if she were truly rescued from her downward spiral when the M.S. Ataraxis hired her as a relief pilot while in port. Since she has no home, the Boadicea Merchant Company has become the closest thing to home or family.

Name: Dr. Virginia Gwendoline de Haviland, M.D.

When Dr. Virginia de Haviland had just completed her residency and had been licensed by the Imperial Medical Bureau, during psychological screening for a position at a Church of Tonopah hospital, it came out that she was molested by a church leader when she was a teenager. To avoid trouble, the Church began a smear campaign against Virginia and her family. She left her life on Tonopah in disgrace, her family not believing her, and assumed a new identity on Cymbeline.
Since it was difficult to get a medical license under a new identity without some background history, she decided to sign on as a Ship's Doctor aboard the M.S. Boadicea and now aboard the M.S. Ataraxis. Her sister, Cassandra, finally caught up to her when the ship was in port at the Terra system (Sol, xxxx). She is relieved to hear that her immediate family has been safely settled on Cymbeline, and her sister has sworn to stay close to her. She does not know of some of the deeds of her sister, and would not understand because, despite her abuse, she is a pacifist.

She is an older sister to Dr. de Haviland (q.v.) and very similar in appearance, often mistaken as a twin of Virginia. Cassandra was always interested in warfare and outdoors activities; when she was twelve, she was sent to live with an uncle off-planet who was a retired marine and avid hunter. At age sixteen while on safari to a primitive planet, her uncle was killed by a giant bear-like creature that she was able to kill with her sword. She was raised by the natives of the planet and taught the skills of a warrior. When an Imperial Marines recruiting drive came to the planet, she volunteered to get passage off-planet. During training, her intelligence was noted and she was offered OCS training which she excelled at. Because of her background with primitive technology and excellent hand-to-hand skills, she was assigned to Force Recon for special operations and infiltration. When she was finally able to return to Tonopah, she learned of the disgrace of her sister and the reprisals against her family. She is suspected of the murder of a church leader on Tonopah and is under a fatwa; this is ok with her as she would love to carve up some more of the church's minions. She has finally found her sister and is very protective; she has resigned from the Imperial Marines to serve where she can to keep an eye on her sister.

The sword is sheathed in a gravity sheath scabbard of Ancient's Technology, but covered in inlaid mithril and fire gems. The scabbard is also a family heirloom and kept a secret from the Imperial government.

He dreamed that someone had jumped him in a dark alley and had shoved a plastic bag over his head...

The silken suddenness of death's complete mastery shook StuWiFoo out of a coma-like sleep where the paralyzing terror of frightened dreams gave way to brutal reality. The dark of the aircraft passenger seating was only punctuated briefly by weak red LED flashes reflected from the shiny plastic of limply floating oxygen masks. Everything was floating. Suddenly the dark was shattered by an active flashlight wielded by a surviving flight attendant, the suddenness of the bright light like lightning flashing through a midsummer's night. The blueish-white beam played across the interior of the cabin, skipping quickly over the obviously dead passengers to briefly light upon the handful still alive. The beam of light flickered over to the sealed, twisted, cockpit door with a small rent in the frame where swirled a small funnel of dust and paper as the air bled into nothing.

"I think our air is goink." Spoke one surviving passenger with a Russian accent. "The oxygen masks are dead," gasped a woman. And now Stu could hear the hiss of escaping air. Already two other survivors were hastening like first time swimmers to float their way over to the leak and stuff something into the hiss. The illumination in the cabin wavered as another survivor jostled the passenger holding the flashlight. Eternity passed in ice-age seconds. Finally, the screamingly long twenty seconds that it took to seal the leak were over and everyone took a deep breath wishing the air were thicker. One more passenger, an Egyptian by appearance, spoke with an Arabic accent, "What do we do now?" The other passengers sighed, as if acknowledging the question, but no one replied.

Sometimes in your journey through life, you encounter circumstances that make you realize that you are thoroughly, ineffably, screwed. In the shock and confusion of returning consciousness among the passengers still alive on Flight 29, it occurred to these passengers rather quickly that they were in this screwed state. As some among the small crowd began to mutter prayers to themselves, the dark sense of doom was suddenly suspended.

The sound of a strange violent dull clunk as of machinery suddenly becoming one with the hull of the aircraft radiated in the thin air from about where the mid-section emergency door was located. A rhythmic tapping on the door denoting intelligence began and then repeated.

As Stu began to realize that the tapping sounded like Morse code, he found his thoughts interrupted by the excited voice of another passenger, a young woman who was obliviously translating the letters being spelled out and muttering, "O-f-f-n-e-t" "What does it mean?"
Remembering conversations with a brother at the Language School, it immediately came to Stu's mind--"Is it German?"--then out loud, "it's Ö-f-f-n-e-t which is German for 'open'."

"But the air," wailed a passenger. Before anyone could object, Stu pushed through and began the procedure for opening the door. The door opened to better air and flashlight beams poking into the dark cabin. "Guten Tag," began a man dressed in a uniform reminiscent of a passenger ship's officer, "Ihr komst", and then looking at Stu and a number of other passengers, in broken English, "You come--all!"

Background for Stu Wi Foo part 2: Temporal Theory

In 1957, Dr. Hugh Everett III came up with the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics, as a way to resolve the paradoxes of the Privileged Observer and such thought experiments as Schrödinger's Cat. The Privileged Observer (according to the rival Copenhagen Interpretation) is the observer who causes the quantum wave function to "collapse" into particles with location and speed and other characteristics while under observation. Schrödinger's Cat is inside a box with a vial of deadly poison that will break when a given atom decays and releases an alpha particle, killing the cat. Since quantum-mechanically, the atom might or might not release a particle at the instant of decay, the cat is famously half-alive and half-dead in the Copenhagen Interpretation--until the Privileged Observer opens the box and "collapses" the cat into either the alive or dead state.

According to Everett's interpretation, every quantum "choice" creates two worlds, two timelines. In one, the observer sees a live cat. In the other, the observer sees a dead cat. There is no Privileged Observer, because both outcomes occurred--just not in the same universe. Every single decision, every single atomic flow or switch, creates another worldline. Initially, the Many Worlds Interpretation held that information (and therefore energy, and therefore, matter) could never pass between worlds. However, string theory in the 1960's, and strange experimental results showing seemingly instantaneous "dipole communication" in the next decades, made it seem theoretically possible.

Van Zandt's discoveries did not actually solve the question. Although he discovered many worlds, they weren't of the infinite "one photon displaced" variety the orthodox Many Worlds Interpretation predicts. Instead, they were like "knots" in the superstring--places where the potential fog of alternatives "collapses" into actual worlds. Further, these "knots" are bunched up into different "energy levels" that Van Zandt dubbed the quantum levels, or quanta.

Thus, parachronics actually managed to combine Everett's theory with an empirical Privileged Observer--the parachronic traveler. And that, with minor mathematical fillips, is where the theory remains even now, with nobody satisfied, and with some radical theorists proposing that a kind of Observer Effect holds for parallel worlds, or that the expectations of the traveler have some effect on his destination.

Precisely how the infinite worlds vary and interrelate remains a tangle. Most of the fundamental physical constants remain the same, but some differ wildly while somehow not reducing the universe to quantum fog. It's difficult to make valid crosstime theories work, in large part because physical laws don't seem to hold constant across the continuum. Not only are there worlds where magic works, or where the luminiferous ether exists, there are innumerable subtle variations down to the level of individual electrons. Other changes don't seem to make any real sense, or exist in isolation when they should affect the entire system of physical constants. For example, there are two worlds in which the speed of light is measurably greater by some half of a percent, and one in which it is less by almost a full percent.

In Earth 0, the speed of light is actually decreasing by a very small amount constantly.

The only universal difference is that the second is nanofractionally slower on all known inhabited world-lines except four: Homeline, Centrum, Shikaku-Mon, and Imperium 0 (unknown to the first three).

Stu’s eyes focused on a television screen and his thoughts began to clear. That voice sounded so familiar. On the screen rolled scenes from someone’s life. “Look, what the hell do you want with me?” Stu whispered.
“Just look at the screen, this is what your life was about to become”—on the screen showed a prison, years of dangerous living, and bad choice after bad choice. It suddenly occurred to Stu that he was the person on the video. “I had to intervene; you pissed away so much potential.”
“In about twenty minutes, you will become drowsy, fall asleep, and when you awake, you are going to follow the instructions in the brief-case that I am leaving you.”
When Stu awoke, he was alone, unrestrained and resting on a bed in a hotel room. On a recliner facing the bed, sat a brief-case. Stu, jumped up, popped open the brief-case and came to a complete stop. His jaw slackened as he saw stack after stack of hundred dollar bills. On the top of the stacks of money was a manila folder with twenty or thirty pages of type written instructions, documents, and receipts.
